Wellcome Collection: 'Medicine Man' + 'Medicine Now'

WELLCOME COLLECTION:

1-2: sensor-activated eye. movement based. interactivity - awareness of those around.

3: portraits and photographs of tribes, cultural wellbeing and rituals for good health and wellbeing.

4: reproduction of an etching by Van Gogh of Dr Gachet for the blind - great way to include those with visibility problems and interact with the work.

5 and 6: Pieces of body, tattooed skin. Mummified male body of the Chimu people. buried with possessions for the afterlife, good health and riches etc.

7: child and young man 10 years apart - told to express themselves however they felt at the time. interesting how we change as we grow and our mindset changes.

8 and 9: non-important pills taken for enhancement of hair, nails, etc. taken and carved into the shape of the body part meant to be enhanced. ribcage, hands, body. scale was interesting - changing shapes and forms to give meaning and information.

10 and 11: areas of the brain responding to the 5 senses, in order, sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch. visual reference of feeling and emotion and how much it seems to affect us.

12: large body, buttons that highlight areas of the body - interactive, large scaled.

13: mixed media, worries on cloning and reproduction. interesting use of collage and sewing into work!

Whitechapel: Mark Dion: Theatre of the Natural World

1 and 2: Stands used for hunters - one was inaccessible but vry high, the other was accessible and furnished with animal skulls and camoflage.

3 and 4: Aviary, 40 finches among manmade structures. Birds making nests in manmade objects - coexistence between nature and artificially made was interesting. beautiful sense of peace! apple tree in middle symbolises tree of life. books on growth, medicine and living.

5: tar prints of sticks to create tree illustrations. perhaps do some relief prints as response? natural imagery.

6: sketches and working drawings - plans. good to view when beginning a new project and understanding working process.

7 8 and 9: collections! caps, letters, plastic objects found from digs. co ordinated by colour and sizes, very interesting and insightful into history and human's use of objects and design. narrative of collections.

10 and 11: The Wonder Workshop - blacklighted objects, both real and made up as well as extinct animals on shelves. plethora and mix of what is real and what is not. humans driving to extinction. relates well with primer task of parrots.

Tate Modern:

1: robot made from older radios, screens placed inside with sci-fi robot movies and videos of robotic toys. lives of people and the use of electronics like television and radios as a media.

2: tower of 'babel' made of radio towers. interesting to walk around and hear multiple changes in voice and music as you move. symbolises disconnection with each other and being overwhelmed by voices and noise.

3: Magnets distorting Nixon's famous speech. used to replicate the warping and twisting of his words.

guerilla girls and andy warhol - feminist movement. women making it into museums and exhibitions. wage gap, political correctness. very important!!
