Building a Narrative Timeline

Making quick drawings using pastels to build a narrative into 5 illustrations. I used a yellow colour to signify where I wanted gold colouring.

1. Setting the scene - I drew the door to the apartment the boys and family live in, ultimately where the scene ends.

2. Build up - One of the boys in the scuba gear that is established within the text.

3. Peak / Pivotal point - A non-descript hand in the golden water, the boys' boat floating in the distance.

4. Climax - Firemen's boots (wasn't very obvious) at the door to the apartment, which has gold leaking from the bottom.

5. - Aftermath - The leopard print furniture covered with gold drippings, to show the apartment after the tragedy.

^ Sketches, trying to figure out the points I'd use for my illustrations.

While this exercise was good in helping me pick out key points in my narrative arc, I'm not happy with the images I produced as pieces themselves, and so I like to think of them more as rough ideas to help me pick out points of narrative and interest within the text.

This is the images put together as a narrative series, and while I like the effect the different coloured papers made as well as the contrast from the pastels, I only like them as reference material and not as pieces to be worked further on.
